STOP COMMON CORE IN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS -SEND LETTER TO FL BISHOPS

Your Excellency;

I pray you can spare a few moments for me as I realize you must be very busy. If an assistant is reading this, please present my letter to the Bishop.

Our family and our children have been raised in the Catholic Faith attending Catholic education. I now have major questions and grave concerns about my faith and its embrace of Common Core, the educational program the Federal government is pushing. I fear not only for Catholic students but for all children attending schools. Our children are being taught using Common Core methods and concepts. We have educated ourselves on Common Core over the past year and the more we have learned the more we are alarmed.

When I think of teachers in both private and public schools, I certainly understand why they cannot speak out . . . job security, especially in the public school system.

We were all fooled about Common Core, parents, educators, administrators and also our Bishops. It sounded nice to hear, “that all kids would be equal”; well, kids are not equal, they all have different strengths and talents. Those in charge of our Catholic Schools, who decided that Common Core was good for Catholic students, were fooled too. Even our Governors were fooled, thinking the same thing; but more importantly, they were bribed to “jump on board” with Common Core. Easy to understand once you realize their reward would be millions of dollars for two government programs that were losing their states’ money, “Race to the Top” and “No Child Left Behind”. It was and is “all about the money” and this decision was because of it.

I am very concerned however, that our Bishops in Florida are embracing Common Core and not protecting our children from this socialized approach of brainwashing children starting in Kindergarten. There are tens of thousands in Florida and millions across this nation that are much smarter than I, who oppose Common Core. I am sure you received, along with all Catholic Bishops across the U.S., the letter from GERARD V. BRADLEY, PROFESSOR OF LAW – UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME and signed by 132 professors, which warns all U.S. Catholic Bishops, to remove Common Core from Catholic schools, stating how harmful Common Core is for our children, visit www.FloridaCatholicsAgainstCommonCore.com site to see a copy of it.

You may also be aware that Catholic schools in Wisconsin have recently removed Common Core. The Diocese of Superior, Wisconsin recently announced that its 15 elementary and middle schools choose not to implement the new national curriculum. Bishop William Christensen’s decision follows that of several other Wisconsin dioceses. I applaud and appreciate what these Bishops have done, they are very brave men. Will you join them?

In addition many states like NY, TX, KY, OK, IN, WY, FL and others, have either opposed or paused Common Core, and the latest, the Tennessee State House just voted to delay Common Core for 2 years. The Governor of Florida has signed 3 bills against Common Core standards. Governor Rick Scott told The Report Card’s Bill Korach that Common Core is no longer the educational standard in the State of Florida. Accompanied by his Educational Policy Director, Dr. Kim McDougal Gov. Scott stated: “The Florida State Standard is The standard, not Common Core.” The three bills are HB 7031, CS/SB 18 and SB 864, requires school districts to set up a process through which parents can contest the selection of certain textbooks and classroom materials.

Not only do we believe that ALL Catholic Bishops should remove Common Core from all their schools, we think it is their responsibility to warn all educators, in all schools, against Common Core. Not to speak, is to speak!

We believe however, that God has blessed us all with common sense and a moral compass . . . and with honest scrutiny – is it impossible to embrace Common Core. These federal top-down standards are designed by special interest groups, to take school curriculum away from parents and local communities. Children need education that fits their unique needs. Common Core’s top-down approach fails helping individual students.

We agree with the statement that “Common Core’s standards require that everyone think and learn alike. It eliminates school choice because everyone must teach the same thing in the same way at the same time — all for the sake of our government and special interest businesses. With Common Core, business comes first, education comes last and rights and liberty are nowhere to be found.”

Can you name a government program that is successful and cost efficient? Government programs rank very low with almost all having enormous waste; take for example, the post office, social security, health care mandate, almost every program administered by our government wastes resources, are ineffective, and cost excessive amounts of money with very poor results. Common Core will be no different.

Why would we or our Catholic Bishops in particular, want our government to track over 400 areas of personal information and extensive records on our children and their families, implement repeated iris scans on our children for identification, teach socialist principles, diminish parental influence and control, extinguish God or any reference to God in public schools (or in our Country for that matter), downplay Christianity and the Jewish Faith while elevating the Faith of Islam, distort and recreate history, criticize America, idolize Communist countries while elevating communism as something to strive for, teach untested math which at best makes little sense, lower the bar on reading by substituting and introducing inappropriate and fictional material, and preparing students to be clones, dependent on government instead of thinking as individuals with different God given gifts?

After listening to a recent state-wide conference call, a Ph.D. who spoke, relayed all the many errors she and her team have found in the history being taught to our kids. I started wondering, with the “sue everyone” mentality of Americans, would not the school(s), individual teachers, administrators, and the state education department be collectively and personally legally liable, for knowingly teaching false information to the innocent minds of our children? Maybe if every school were held accountable in court, they might rethink what they are teaching, making sure it was only the truth. Could you be placing our Catholic schools in jeopardy by embracing Common Core?

Why did the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA)—a Washington, DC lobbying group for Catholic education accept more than $100,000.00 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to promote the Common Core in Catholic schools throughout the country? Should we follow the money?

Why do our Catholic Bishops feel it is OK to take a back seat to the Government, making our kids dependent on it? If the Order of Nuns, The Little Sisters of the Poor can stand up against the government, why can’t our Bishops?

Stand up – it is our Bishops responsibility to protect our kids in your schools. As our government challenges us from every angle, my Catholic Faith is challenged even more, I pray that yours is.

We are also against the use of iPads and we want to opt out of having our children exposed to the dangers of the internet on the easily hacked iPads.

I plead with you to protect our kids, stand up now against Common Core and encourage others to do the same. Speak loud and clear, so others will have the courage to follow your lead.

Time is quickly running out . . . it is up to you to stand up – protect your school children!

Thank you for your time.

Respectfully,

PLEASE STOP THE USE OF ANY AND ALL COMMON CORE IN OUR SCHOOLS. LETS RETURN TO THE SOLID TEACHINGS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.

  2. Hampton Scott Tonk says

I am a Lutheran, and I stand solidly with my Catholic brothers and sisters on this matter; however, I cannot qualify to persuade their excellencies the Catholic Bishops of the truths stated in the above letter; but I do urge the Catholic Bishops to seriously consider for two reasons: (1) because Catholics are asking for the Bishops’s support, and (2) because this letter should be considered on its own merits.

The Blessings of the Holy Trinity One in Essence and Undivided: The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit!

I am a Catholic convert and was not raised by Catholic schools. Regardless, I am very disappointed to read many Catholic bishops have been hooked into the government take-over of education in their schools through Common Core including the Archbishop of Atlanta.

Our government who forces her citizens through taxation to pay for the killing of babies and other evils contrary to God’s laws is not to be trusted.

  4. Jose Espinal says

I strongly oppose to the common core. I strongly support the Florida Catholic opposition on this issued. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to voice my views on this issued.

  5. Denise Laufenberg says

Let us remain true to the Judeo Christan principles our country was founded on. Stand up for teaching truth. Stand up for the principle that the state exists to serve man, not man to serve the state as is taught me in Common Core.nLet us not be fooled.

  6. Marcia Quinlan Rogero says

Please allow our children to learn the basic truths of our faith and to grow in their love of God and the mission of His son Jesus. Let us all remain true to the one Holy Catholic and Apostolic church. Mrs Rogero

  7. Tom Ewert says

Careful – Governor Rick Scott called it The Florida State Standard and said he does not recommend CommonCore. So what is The Florida State Standard? I think we had better take a look at The Florida State Standard before we all say that’s great. You can call a glass of vinegar “orange juice” but it would still be hard to swallow.

  8. Mirtha says

I strongly oppose to the common core. I strongly support the Florida Catholic opposition on this issue. Thanks for taking a stand.

  9. Antoinette says

Please take a stand! We strongly oppose common core curriculum!
We want freedom in the U.S. to teach our kids at home and at school.

    DIOCESE OF PALM BEACH
    C/O BISHOP BARBARITO
    9995 N. MILITARY TRAIL
    P.B. GARDENS, FL. 33410

    Dear Beloved Bishop Barbarito:
Hope all is well on this very first day of the brand new school year, as this has always been a celebration for me for so many years – watching our beloved school children being dropped off at our wonderful Catholic schools throughout our beloved diocese. But, this year, and especially today, was a day of sadness and disappointment. Tough day all around for me. For many in our diocese…

In all due respect, I don’t think that I have to explain why I am so sad and disappointed about today. It is simply two words – they begin with the same letters as Catholic Church – Common Core…To say that I am devastated that our 7 Catholic dioceses in our beloved state decided to adopt the Common Core State Standards (by simply changing the name of Common Core to whatever they are calling it these days), and still use every one of their text books and components, holding up the Common Core Standards – has almost taken a toll on this Christian on a Mission.

It truly is beyond disheartening. Especially since I know exactly what is behind the intrinsic evils that represent Common Core – Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Planned Parenthood, Agenda 21, the United Nations and countless crooked politicians who are here to make a buck and pollute our beloved school children, while selfishly fulfilling their personal motives and agendas.

Bishop, you know how difficult it is to have to write a letter like this to you. It is a very sensitive matter. You know how much love and respect I have had for you these past 11 years (Your Anniversary of August 28th is right around the corner). How does one write a heartfelt letter to somebody he so much admires, honors and loves – while at the same time – trying to tell the Truth without offending or disrespecting him. After all, you are the Bishop of the Diocese of Palm Beach and I revere your Holiness and what you stand for, beyond words.

I think that you would have a pretty good idea of what I have been through these past 12 months fighting the Curse of Common Core. I have been non-stop since last August 1st, 2013. I trust that you have kept up with my e-mails on this issue through our beloved Annette Russell, who is a GOD-sent in both of our lives. I have literally spilled my guts out to the entire country with this issue, including meeting with all of our Bishops from Florida back on March 25th, writing to every single Bishop in our country in October, and even writing a heartfelt letter to Pope Francis back on September 15th, 2013. I have laid my entire life, job, career and ministry on the line in order to fight this intrinsic evil and like countless people in this country know – it caused me my job with our beloved diocese. That’s a whole other story, in itself…

Bishop: How “100” Catholic Dioceses around the country have compromised their Catholic integrity and crossed over the line to adopt Common Core in their respective dioceses is beyond me. Especially our “7” dioceses here in Florida. Common Core has nothing to do with the Catholic schools. It has never been mandated to them; it was never written for them; it has never been recommended to them; it has never been a part of the talk or conversation with them; it has never been part of any of their curriculum and I am still at a loss for words after meeting with Governor Rick Scott’s Education Policy Coordinator, Kim McDougal, in Tallahassee last March 26th, when she even asked me “Willy, why on earth would the 7 Catholic Dioceses in our state continue to pursue and implement Common Core, when we are not giving them a penny? You need to see where they are getting their millions from. You are going to be appalled when you find your answer”…

And, after spending a full 12 months trying to get to the bottom of this controversial issue, everybody in this country have all told me the same thing: “Follow the money trail. It’s all about the money and everybody in this country knows that those Catholic schools will sell their souls at the cost of their beloved children for that Almighty Dollar…and quickly forget the Almighty Father…

And, Bishop, that has been my theme from Day I: The Almighty Dollar vs. the Almighty Father – while writing a thousand e-mails on how we cannot do business with the devil as the Holy Bible clearly says “we cannot serve two masters”…

On July 2nd, I read the beautiful letter you wrote my good friend, Pro-Life colleague and tremendous Christian on a Mission supporter, Charles Gusmano. As you know, he and Karmita have 7 beautiful children (ages 1 year – 18 years old), of which “5” of them are in our Catholic school system. You clearly wrote in this letter:

“The Catholic schools in the Diocese of Palm Beach are not
adopting the Common Core State Standards”.

Mr. Gusmano called me immediately, sent me a copy of your inspirational letter, we celebrated, and I fell to my knees, thanking our Heavenly Father for this blessing. I shared it with several of my anti-Common Core Pro-Life colleagues, and we all thought “this is it – the Truthful statement from our beloved Bishop stating what we have all been fighting and waiting for, for the past year – NO Common Core in our diocese”! Like American Life League’s Jim Sedlak said – “Let’s claim Victory”! Now, mind you, this is coming from the Holiest man that we know personally and how in GOD’S name could we even question the integrity of our own Bishop? It was “gospel” to all of us…

We took it to the bank; we claimed victory! I told the entire country and millions of people all over our nation heard about the “Bold and Ever-Holy Diocese of Palm Beach” saying NO to Common Core. My cell phone almost blew up and my computer was on the blink as so many people from all over the country called to say congratulations! Your name and our beloved diocese was the talk of the town as many national publications delivered the GOD news to those who are still trying to figure how to get rid of an “Anti-Catholic Curriculum from a Pro-Catholic Diocese”…go figure…

And, now, to throw a wrench, a hammer and a screwdriver into our short-lived celebration, our superintendent, Gary Gelo, delivered a letter to our Catholic families that literally knocked me off my seat this past Monday. Sick to my stomach – contradicting everything that you had stated in your letter to Charles Gusmano. And, numerous parishioners and parents called me as upset as could be! “Willy, how can the Bishop put this statement out saying “No Common Core in the Diocese of Palm Beach” – then, the superintendent saying the same thing…but, elaborating in his confusing explanation how the diocese is “still going to implement Common Core, by way of textbooks, materials and all the components that come with this evil”. I’m no dummy. It is plainly putting lip stick on a pig…and, all of our students and teachers as well as thousands of parishioners in our diocese have been fooled by this sneaky tactic. And, it came out just two weeks before the school year was to begin…

Well, today was the very first day of school and I already have heard about the kids coming home with school books that have the “kiss of death” written on them: Common Core. Beyond surreal, Bishop. A slap in the face. A bad dream. Right before our very own eyes. Our own Catholic school leaders going against the teachings of our own Holy Catholic Church, compromising their Catholic integrity all for that Almighty Dollar. And, we are not only allowing it – but, endorsing and promoting it…at the cost of our 6,000 school children in our diocese…

Bishop: You know the love and respect that I have for you these past 11 years. And, I know the love and respect you have for me. You know exactly how I feel about you as I have told you countless times to your face that I love you. I have utmost reverence for you as I have written more e-mails about you that any other person in my life. As a matter of fact, many of our readers have actually asked me on several occasions: “Willy, what is Bishop Barbarito’s first name? Is it “Beloved”??? And, when I do look back at the thousands of e-mails I have written about you – I cannot find one that does not have the word “beloved” in front of Bishop Barbarito. True fact. Now, I’ve got to tell these people that you first name is actually Gerald. I forgot myself. LOL!!

Bishop, I can’t thank you enough for your time and efforts as I humbly come to you in as loving but firm manner as I can to see what we can do about this Curse of Common Core. We all know that something’s gotta give – and I am not giving in because the Holy Spirit will not allow me to. I will give my entire being to save our beloved school children and our beloved Catholic Church and I will not back off this fight until we finally do what GOD is calling us to do and put our children and teachers first. We owe it to them and we are the only ones who can correct this serious problem. And, we are just seeing the “tip of the iceberg”. Wait until you see what happens next year and the year after. The liberal Obama administration will be calling all the shots. Once we do business with the devil, we have to dance to his music…and, he not only went down to Georgia – he’s alive and well in Florida…

The school year just kicked off. It is not too late. If you can try to meet with Gary Gelo this week when you get back in town and share this letter with him, I would greatly appreciate it. If we can get rid of Common Core once and for all – everything – the entire Curriculum, the haunting name, the textbooks, the components, the evilness and the bad memories – I will be forever indebted to you. Our entire diocese will. I know that the textbooks are quite expensive – so I promise to put a TEAM together to raise money to pay for new books, etc. I have sent Annette Russell and Gary Gelo countless different Classical Catholic Curriculum over the past few months that stay completely away from Common Core. Take a look at St. Jerome in Hyattsville, Maryland. Phenomenal diocese! We have a ton of resources within our Activist Team and we are all ready to deliver. We can do this if we all work “Two-Gether” as One Body in Christ. Please get back to me when you get a chance and let’s prayerfully do what our Lord & Savior would want us to do as His Faithful Followers:

    “REVERSE THE CURSE”!!

May GOD Bless and Keep You Always!

One of the primary goals of Marxism is to educate children very early to shape their views into thinking that only government will give them everything to satisfy their needs .It is the belief of Marxism that free will can be driven out of an individual through education. Thus we have Common Core which treats all students as having “common needs” and not individual needs. Gone is the difference in individual learning pace. Gone is the difference in childhood development with boys versus girls in childhood etc, etc. Common Core has overstepped the bounds of education being a federal program versus a state/local program. The standards are being forced on our children by Washington bureaucrats. This is unconstitutional! It is nothing more than another “control” movement by the government. May God send the Holy Spirit to enlighten, guide and direct us back to an education curriculum which has been very successful for many years.

  12. L. J. Garcia says

    Judge Common Core education yourself.
Please sit in a sex education classroom, watch and listen. It is sickening.
Sit in the classroom, read some of the books. Look for topics that you believe are critical to a well rounded, quality education – many are missing. Look for the propaganda and socialist bias. Look for blatant lies in what is being taught.
    PLEASE!!!!!

    Thank you

Catholic School students have traditionally done well in school with good old Catholic teaching methods. No need to reinvent the wheel; why try to fix what isn’t broken.

When we decided to send our kids to catholic schools we made a commitment to pay tuition for our kids to receive above standard education, not common education. If we wanted our kids to receive the same education as all other kids, we would not need to pay tuition, we would just send our kids to a public school. Personally I prefer that my kids stand out than blend in with the rest.

Finally, please don’t get fooled by so called “Florida Standards”. I have seen them and they are “Common Core Standards” with a different name. The public school system specializes in coming up with new names and acronyms for everything every year.

I strongly oppose Common Core standards in our children’s Catholic schools. Our children don’t need to be “common”.

  14. Rich Libero says

My daughter attends Pre-K at a Catholic school. We are new to the state and I was surprised — although I should’ve known better — to learn that Common Core and the Federal Government’s tentacles have reached into Catholic schools. Aside from faith, my main goal in sending my kids to Catholic school was to avoid Federal overreach and Common Core standards.

For the first time in my life, I drove away from a conversation with a teacher feeling as though I am trapped in a country where a specific system is being foisted upon my family. The options aren’t great. We will now seriously look into home schooling. I have friends who have older kids in public schools and they are 100% frustrated with this curriculum. We are also concerned about the messaging and HOW are kids are being taught to think.

America has always been an exceptional nation of dynamic, free-thinking, innovative people with an endless drive toward ingenuity, generosity and individuality. Our Founders built this nation with God as its guiding light and principal. Common Core completely snuffs that out.

I will say this to Bishops: Do not align the Church with our Leftist government. Leftists are Godless ideologues bent on controlling every aspect of our lives. Among their many sins, their greatest is believing they can make decisions reserved only for God. They ultimately seek to the destroy or completely minimize the Church., but will use it so long as it serves their long-term purpose. Stop parroting Leftist talking points in sermons and rely, instead, on the true word of the Bible. Accepting Common Core standards in our schools weakens us all and plays into the hands of those who seek to destroy us.

  15. Sandra Trusso says

    Your Excellency,
Forty years ago when Sex Education was implemented into Florida schools, we were told that it was to reduce Teen Pregnancy. Although the program did teach explicit sex information, it also indoctrinated into moral and political values and principles in opposition to ours. The program began by being called Sex Education, but as parents began to notice what was in the program and opposed it, the name was changed to Human Growth and Development. This is how the government tries to fool the people, just as Common Core is now changed to Florida Standards. Common Core is the completion of the values and principles which began with Sex Education. The difference is that Sex Ed was subtle indoctrination, and Common Core is blatant. DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE ARE NO TEEN PREGNANCY FIGURES? Did you know that the pregnancy figures quoted are only an estimate based on the birth rate, and 2 other estimates (the abortion estimate and the miscarriage estimate). Consider this: If the pregnancy rate is lowered and the abortion rate is lowered, this could give you a higher birth rate among teens. When this happens Planned Parenthood says “look… we must expand our sex ed programs to reach more teens. Then if the pregnancy rate increases and the abortion rate increases, this could give you a lower birth rate among teens. Then Planned Parenthood says “look how successful we are, we need to reach more teens”. The truth is that there ARE NO ACCURATE TEEN PREGNANCY FIGURES! This is how people are deceived into accepting the need for Sex Ed. The same deceptions hold true for Common Core. We need to check testimonies throughout the country as to what is happening with Common Core programs in their areas! Aside from the moral aspect, this program will dumb down our children in areas of English, Math, History, etc.

Just as with Sex Education, we’re told there is no curriculum, and no approved text books. However, one must question (after attending a School Board Convention in Miami after the implementation of Sex Ed) how it is that throughout the U.S. the students were all learning the same values? I fought Sex Ed in Miami, and was asked by Arch Bishop McCarthy to sit in on a meeting with Miami School Board members, himself and other members among Catholic leadership. I would be honored to meet with you to discuss what we have learned over the years, at any time it is convenient for you.
